About flagbase

flagbase is a free reference for the flags of the world: downloads, color codes and lookups, without sign-ups.

Where the flags come from

All flag artwork comes from flag-icons by Panayiotis Lipiridis and contributors, released under the MIT License. You can use the SVG and PNG files here for any purpose, including commercial work, as long as you keep that license notice. Read the license.

How the color codes are measured

Each flag is rendered and every pixel is matched to the nearest color declared in its SVG. A color is listed when it covers at least 1.5% of the flag, so fine detail in coats of arms is left out. The values describe the artwork, which may differ from a government's official color specification.

How similar flags are found

Every flag is shrunk to a small thumbnail and compared pixel by pixel with every other flag. The closest matches are listed on each flag page, which is why pairs like Chad and Romania, or Indonesia and Monaco, find each other.
